Des Brophy
Having lived by the sea for most of his younger life, Des' early inspiration came from the sea and coastal areas that he was familiar with. From an early age he expressed an interest in art, and would draw as a small child.

At the age of 22 while a young RAF serviceman he spent some time in an RAF hospital. During this time Des learned the basics of watercolour technique, and continued to nurture his desire to paint after leaving hospital.

It was not until Des was in his early forties that he met a local Artist (and retired Art Teacher) John Greensmith R.W.S.. John showed great patience and tolerated Des' insatiable need to learn the techniques of handling watercolour. Resulting in paintings of local landscapes of bleak Derbyshire moorland scenes with dramatic and wild skies. To this day Des still enjoys the beauty of the Derbyshire moorland and villages.

The movement towards humorous images seemed to come naturally to Des, through his keen interest in, and observations of human behaviour. This was reinforced whilst working for many years with the Police in Sheffield, and the observing of drunks and the other interesting characters in the Pubs and Clubs of that city.

Many artists have inspired Des to paint. Turner particularly, the Impressionists in general and many contemporary Artists like Rowland Hilder, Rowland Batchelor and Robert Heindel.

More recently, Des discovered the joy of painting in oil on larger canvases – costal scenes with on-going skies are creeping back into his repertoire.

In 2006 Des was approached by an art publisher working for P&O and Princess Cruise Liners. His work has since been exhibited and sold on various international cruise ships, with each collection successfully selling out.

In Des' words:

'I enjoy the simple pleasure that comes with the creativity of painting.'
